Turn your iPad into an instrument of the violin family and play just like on a real instrument !
FingerFiddle introduces a new and highly sensitive musical experience with your IOS device. Your actions on the screen are turned naturally into an exceptionally realistic and responsive sound, whatever you do. Place your fingers on the fingerboard to change notes. Move your other hand on the screen to rub the strings with the bow and shape the sound continuously in real-time. Pluck the screen to play pizzicato. FingerFiddle responds accurately to your movements and lets you play with the full palette of violin expression, just like with a real instrument.
FingerFiddle is a musical instrument that you can bring with you everywhere to play, practice, have fun and perform with others. It includes a full collection of fine-tuned instruments from the violin family (violin, viola, cello and double bass). The free version comes with a cello, and other instruments are available to try and purchase. Wherever you are, at any time, pick one of the instruments and play music for real with FingerFiddle
- Natural mapping between movement and sound: your finger is the bow !
- Outstanding sound rendering for a realistic output
- Pitch is controlled with a fingerboard on the screen to allow fiddle-specific playing techniques (vibrato, glissando, chords)
- The fingerboard is customizable: set its width and the space between notes for a comfortable playing
- A specific area is dedicated to pizzicato playing
- Very low memory requirement: no samples library is used
- The free version includes the Cello from the Classic Collection. Other instruments are available as In App purchases (Violin, Viola, Double Bass, normal or with mutes)
OK got it? If so you're probably still not reading this because you'll be having a blast suddenly being able to play a real instrument. Not the screaming, flame throwing, teen murdering axe your mum was scared of, but an actual refined and elegant instrument that you should be in a suit to even take out of the case. But if you are (reading) then know that for no cash down you now have a very playable iPad instrument that sounds pretty much like a Cello! And it really PLAYs ....
OK, strictly speaking it's not a guitar, though I have seen players of the sting family occasionally hold and play their fiddles like a guitar, so that qualifies them for this site ... particularly since apps of this quality are very thin on the ground.
So FingerFiddle launches with a really informative tutorial which runs the user through the app's features. Most of these have nothing to do with menus and background colors, they are all focussed on playing the instrument. Wow that's a concept for developers! FingerFiddle provides a spacious and truly functional space to manipulate and play the models (no samples) of each instrument in its library. The Cello is the one included for free and it is played by dragging a finger across the empty area of the screen (black) while holding the desired note/s (yes it's polyphonic!). The articulation of the sound is affected by the speed of the 'bowing' motion, the vertical position of the 'bow' on the screen (how close to the fingerboard) and how much screen-area the bowing finger covers. The sound smoothly morphs as you play since there's no need for crappy sample switching, and It sounds amazing! There's even a Pizzicato ( plucking) mode triggered by a drag on the stings of the violin image on the right of the GUI. Further, sliding between notes on the fingerboard while bowing produces an incredibly lifelike pitch modulation. It takes a bit of practice... a bit like brushing your teeth and combing your hair at the same time .. but it sounds so real. To me anyway .... maybe if you can actually play a cello you'll be all fussy, but if you are a humble guitar hero who wants to elevate your place in the world, then this will do the trick!
As I mentioned your free download will get you the Cello instrument free, which I promise you'll have a ton of fun with. But eventually you know you're going to want to resurrect your own version of the Electric Light Orchestra and attempt to record a rock opera or something. So FingerFiddle has 7 extra instruments for sale in-app. They cost $4.99 each or $12.99 for the bunch and include violin, viola and double bass, plus Con Sordino versions of each, which means a 'muted' sound. See, this app is even educational! The developer has also enabled a try-out mode for each instrument before you buy. And you will.
The only things missing for me are AudioBus, which I wrote to the developer about and he replied that it was his number one priority, and perhaps some selectable scale markings on the fingerboard to augment the basic notes already there.
So there you have it. The best playing App released for ages. Total no brainer download.
