Some fun today! Guitar! By Smule is a combination guitar instrument and game. The download is free and provides you with an acoustic guitar and a couple of songs to try out. The goal is to play the selected song on the guitar while a backing vocal sings the song. The guitar player has to play the notes and chords by tapping and swiping on the pad when the indicators ( dots and bars ) reach the white line. The guitar sounds really good and it plays well too! There's effects buttons to add distortion, delay, tremolo and more ... nice! The vocals are supplied by singers who submit tracks via an app called Song. Don't know how that works and nobody wants me to find out, really. Each time you play a song the mix gets recorded for you listen back to. Neat twist! It's fun in that RockBand fashion and way better than a free app usually is.
Because its not free. You knew that right?
The catch is that you have to earn points to unlock songs and play different guitar types. Or buy them. Or even better subscribe ... $2.99 per week, $7.99 per month or $39.99 annually. You'd have to really like the game for that. And I don't know if I do.
At least with the free songs I tried, it was fun at first, but after a couple of run-throughs the relaxed tempos and samey vocal performances made even great songs feel pretty unexciting. I mean 'Scarborough Fair' is pretty mighty with Paul and Art at the mics, but with just another Katy/Taylor sweet-voiced-someone singing, its ... well ... blah ( most of them do a fine job, don't get me wrong but ... well ... you know...). The conceit of RockBand, that I was 'in' Boston, on-stage, raging through Foreplay ( if only for 5 minutes) was (and is) exhilarating. It all sounded and felt right. I am a sad case... lol. Guitar! just doesn't do that and so I don't want to buy into the ecosystem.
Smule have included a Solo mode which permits guitar playing independently of a song which initially I though would make the instrument usable as a Guitar. But I can't kind any way of selecting chords so its a non starter in that camp which is a shame.
So before they get any money from me Smule are going to have to either break out the guitar as a playable unit, or vastly improve the tracks I'm playing to ... maybe with drums, bass etc?
